Shrine Calendar

Mary/statuejohncropped.JPG

Welcome to a very special place, a place where people of all ages and backgrounds come to pray, meditate, and experience the consoling presence of Our Lady, Mary, the Mother of God, and our mother.  This special place is the Servants of Mary Center for Peace in Windsor, Ohio, and the Shrine to Our Lady of Guadalupe.   At the heart of the Shrine is a 50-foot statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

The statue, pictured above and to the right, was built entirely by volunteers and is adorned with nearly half a million mosaic tiles.  It overlooks a reflecting pond and 15-decade illuminated rosary.  The shrine draws many families, individuals, and groups who seek to know God the Father, Son & Holy Spirit through Mary's intercession.  View the video below or read a real-life story about the profound effect a visit to the Shrine can have.

Diamonds in the snow
Did you see them last night?  One good thing about a cold winter night with snow on the ground and a full moon, the snow catches the moonlight and makes it look like the ground is covered with diamonds in the snow.
Please continues to pray for those affected by the Haitian earthquake.

God doesn't want us to be in the dark
Recently at a local Bible study, one of my friends pointed out that God doesn't want us to be in the dark.  On the fourth day of creation according to Gen. 1:16-17 God made two great lights, one to rule the day and the lesser to rule the night, to separate the light from the darkness.  Notice He still set the moon in the darkness for a light.  Then He sent His Son to be the Light of the World.  Go toward the Light.  Go toward God.

Brrrr...it's cold!
An arctic front has moved in and it is cold here!  But the sun shone today making things seem warmer.  Think of the sunshine as God's smile, making your day warmer, lighter and brighter!  And think of your smile as having the same effect on someone who may be feeling emotionally cold.  Share your smile with those you meet and make the day brighter and warmer for you and others!

St. Thomas Aquinas
Can you imagine writing a "summary" of Christian theology over 3000 pages long?  That's what St. Thomas did... and he still had more he wished to write but died before he could finish it.  He is one of the greatest theologians of all time and is considered the patron saint of universities and students.

Wednesday - St. Angela Merici
St. Angela (1474-1540) was used by God to promote the position of women.  At a time when the only women who received an education were the rich or those in religious orders, she founded the Company of St. Ursula (later known as the Ursalines) which was the first teaching order of women, instructing young girls outside the cloister in Catholic theology and Christian living.

Feast of Saints Timothy and Titus
Today is the feast day of two leaders of the early church and close friends of St. Paul.  In addition to the strength of their faith, the strength of their friendship with Paul is also important.  How comforting it is to have a friend in Christ to share your life journey.  May we all be so blessed.

The Conversion of St. Paul
Today commemorates the conversion of St. Paul.  If God can take someone who persecuted His followers and use that same person to do a mighty work, there is hope for all of us.

Trojan Horses
Recently our computer was invaded by a seeming army of trojan horses which caused the hard drive to totally crash and burn beyond repair.  I am so thankful that our God is omnipotent and cannot crash and burn!

St. Agnes
In 304 A.D. 13 year old Agnes chose Christ over riches.  The governor's son had wanted to marry her but she chose to devote her life to Christ instead. The son reported her to his father and she was offered great riches if she would deny Christ.  She happily chose Christ, was tortured and martyred.  How many of us would have the faith to make the choice she made?  With all that surrounds us each day, do we make choices based on faith in our Lord?  We may not have to make the choice of belief or life, but sometimes the more subtle choices are the harder ones to make.

Feast of Fabian, Pope and martyr
In 236 AD people were gathering in Rome to see who would be elected the new Pope.  A farmer named Fabian happened to be in the city when a dove decended and lit on his head.  Fabian, an unknown layman was proclaimed the new Pope!  You never know when God is going to call you.  Pray and be ready.

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity
This week is the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity which began in 1908 with Popes Pius X and Benedict XV blessing it and encouraging its observance.  We all call God Father.  We need to set aside our differences and see ourselves as all children of God.
Today is also Martin Luther King Day the spirit of which also encourages us to set aside our differences and walk hand in hand.

The First Miracle
Today's gospel is about the first miracle - the changing of water into wine at the marriage in Cana.  And it was not just any wine, it was the best wine.  And so it is when Christ comes into our life.  It is not just any life anymore.  It is spiritually the best life.

The Odds of Jesus Being the Messiah
Peter Stoner, Professor Emeritus of Science at Westmont College, calculated the probability of one person fulling 48 of the major prophecies concerning the Messiah.  His conservative calculations were verified by the American Scientific Affiliation as accurate and dependible. The odds?  1 in 10 to the 157th power.  That's 1 with 157 zeros after it.  Guess who fulfilled all 48?

God Calls Us
God calls us first to come to Him and then to serve Him.  His invitation is for all who will open their hearts.  And the service He calls us to is not just for the priesthood or religious order.  Those are special calls.  Each call is special but many are called to serve where they are, by living Christ as a witness to others.  It may be an urge to call someone, a friendly smile or some other "random act of kindness"  Be still and listen so that when God calls you, you can say with the young Samuel, "  Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening." Feast Day of St. Hilary

Born in France in 315 Hilary converted to Christianity as an adult.  Like others we have mentioned before he spoke out against the Arian heresy which recognizes only the human nature of Christ and not the divine.  Unfortunately that heresy persists to this day.  It is fitting that his feast day should fall so close to the celebration of Christ's baptism during which the Holy Spirit decended in the form of a dove and the voice of God the Father was heard to acknowledge Jesus.
Pray for all those affected by the Haitian earthquake.

The Baptism of our Lord
"When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as He was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended on Him in bodily form like a dove.  And a voice came from heaven"'You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.'" Luke 3:21-22. NIV

Sunshine
The sun is shining today and everything seems brighter and more positive even with snow measuring well over a foot on the ground.  And when the Son shines in your heart everything seems brighter and more positive even when you are surrounded by drifts of life's uncertainties.

Snow, snow and more snow!
The first part of Job 37:9 reads "He says to the snow,'Fall on the earth,"...  That part must be referring to the Ohio snow belt which is where Servants of Mary is located!

Blessed Andre Bessettee & St. Raymond Penafort
Opps, missed Blessed Andre on Wednesday.  He had a great devotion to St. Joseph and this Brother of the Holy Cross started building a chapel to St. Joseph with permission of the Archbishop with funds from small collections he had received from giving haircuts and the like.  What started as a 15 by 18' chapel has since become the St. Joseph's Oratory in Montreal, the world's greatest sacntuary dedicated to St. Joseph.  Sometimes small steps lead to something great.

St. Raymond of Penafort was a 13th century Dominican charged by Pope Gregory IX with the overwhelming task of rewriting and condensing all the decrees of the Church to that time.  There were at least 12-14 different collections of decrees.  Several of the decrees were duplicated and redundant.  He persevered and completed the task and his works were then used as the standard in the Church.  And he did this without the use of a computer!

St. John Neumann
Born in Bohemia in 1811 Fr. John Neumann became a founder of Catholic Education in the U.S.  Did you know that he was looking forward to being ordained in Bohemia in 1835 when no one would ordain him because Bohemia was "overstocked" with priests as was the rest of Europe?  He finally made arrangements to be ordained in New York and left his native country behind to follow his calling to the priesthood.  Check out more about him on line.

St. Basil the Great & St. Gregory Nazianzen
These two saints lived in the 300's and became friends while in school in Athens.  Both these saints devoted their lives to work for the church and set aside worldly desires, seeking to assist the poor and infirm, defend the faith from heresies of the time and model how religious should carry out their responsibilities.  Basil's eloquence for the faith earned the title "Great".
